Interdisciplinary Workshop on Sustainability, Environment, and Society
Formed in Fall 2014, the Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop on Sustainability, Environment, and Society brings together scholars from across the University of Michigan whose research focuses on the myriad challenges related to Sustainability, Environment, and Society.
The workshop has two parts:

  1. A writing/research group composed primarily of doctoral students and post-docs that meets biweekly to read and provide feedback on group members’ work, share ideas, discuss topics of interest, and collaborate.
  2. Each semester the group will organize a public speaker event. These will feature prominent scholars working on issues of Sustainability, Environment, and Society.
Workshop Rationale: Global environmental change brings to the fore startling evidence about the pace and scale of changes to Earth systems and the pivotal role humans are playing in driving those changes. Although many more scholars are working on a sustainability and environment-related research agenda, the challenges have not been resolved. Indeed, paths to achieving sustainability and models for its measurement remain highly contested. This foregrounds the importance of interdisciplinary dialog and research as well as fostering the improved ability of researchers to communicate their work to colleagues, stakeholders, and the public. Our workshop on Sustainability, Environment, and Society aims to do just that by creating a forum for emerging scholars from across the university to discuss the latest research and share ideas.
Doctoral students from across the University of Michigan whose research relates to Sustainability, Environment, and Society are encouraged to join.

Michigan University-wide Sustainability & Environment (MUSE) Workshops
MUSE workshop brings together emerging scholars working on important sustainability issues from across the university to discuss the latest research and share ideas.
Workshops will be a mixture of:

  1. presenters discussing their research or facilitating a discussion on a topic,
  2. recent research discussions and evaluations, which could lead to collaborative research letters to journals in response to articles, and,
  3. discussions about research paradigms and challenges in sustainability and interdisciplinary science.
